Outback Imports is excited to announce the addition of 3 new models to our lineup. With the arrival of the 1KZ engine (3.0 litre turbo-diesel) to the Toyota family in late 1993, there is now an alternative to the infamous 2LT for prospective owners of the Hilux Surf and LandCruiser Prado. With an extensive re-design in 1994, the Mitsubishi Delica L400 combines attractive styling with 4WD capability and turbo-diesel powered efficiency.
Long-time Outback followers will remember that the Hilux Surf was offered by Outback back in 2005, but was quickly discontinued when the weaknesses of the 2.4 litre engine became apparent. The 4Runner body style was hugely popular in North America, for good reason. The model offers an excellent balance of size, space, capability and versatility. Prospective buyers will be happy to note that many parts are interchangable between the Japanese and North American versions of this model.
The LandCruiser Prado is a brand-new addition to the Outback lineup. It had also been previously discounted due to the fact that the 2LT was the only diesel engine option. The model is available in 2-door and 4-door configurations, which offer slightly more or slightly less room than the Hilux Surf. Classic 70 Series LandCruiser lines ensure that you'll never confuse your vehicle with another at the mall parking lot.
The Mitsubishi Delica becomes the first Mitsubishi model to be offered by Outback Imports. The extensive improvements that were made to this model in early 1994 with the introduction of the L400 "Spacegear" version have definitely caught our attention. The first units were manufactured in March of 1994, so keep your eyes peeled for some of these beauties to be arriving on Canadian shores very soon.
Other recent developments in admissible models include the availability of the 1KZ engine in the Toyota Hiace van and the introduction of a factory turbocharged diesel engine (TD42T) in the Nissan Safari. Both of these options are currently available via Special Order. Details on our Special Order Program can be found here.
In anticipation of the demand for these models, we have announced our biggest pricing discount to date to help move some of our current inventory. We're offering 10% off of every vehicle price listed on the website, including 'as-is' sales and all available OSP options.
2007 has been an intense and exciting year for Outback so far!
January saw Outback Imports merge with another dynamic Yukon based
company, The Pacesetter Group to form Pacesetter Trading Company
Ltd. of which Outback Imports is now a division. This merger
brings with it tremendous opportunities for Outback and our customers.
In February, our very own, 'Expedition Ready', HDJ81 was
reluctantly put on the market and quickly sold (Unit
ID 07-08).
Of course the only way of dealing with the loss of one great truck is
to get another great truck, so in March we added a gorgeous Nissan
Safari (Unit ID 07-03) to the fleet.
The vehicle was soon sporting some high visibility Outback Decals and
turning heads everywhere.
The drive from Vancouver to Whitehorse with over 1200 lbs of cargo
further strengthened our confidence in the capability, performance, and
efficiency (averaged 11.6 L/100kms) of this model.
Look forward to some pictures of this
unit on some amazing Yukon "Highways" as soon as we get over our
reluctance to blemish its impeccable paint!
Some things to look forward to in 2007:

Winter has arrived to the north and we’re xing our fingers the white stuff comes soon!
As many of you have noticed, the supply of older models such as the LandCruiser BJ73/74 and HJ61 has greatly diminished. With production ending in 1989 and being replaced with the newer HZJ and HDJ models, we’re finding very few clean oldies left overseas. Supply is very limited for these models and time is running out! If you’d like one, please let us know, our special order program may interest you!
TOKYO. A Japanese research team plans to create environmental awareness by entering a race car in the Dakar rally that runs on cooking oil used to fry tempura.
The turbo-engine Land Cruiser 100, sponsored by Toyota, will be the first car completely powered by biodiesel to enter the prestigious event, said Hidefumi Onaka, a lecturer at the Osaka Sangyo University, which helped test the fuel and provided technical support.
"We want to show what tempura oil can achieve, as a way to raise environmental awareness," Onaka said this week. "We're not doing it just for fun, so we decided to enter an internationally acclaimed event and appeal to the world."
Driving the car will be former Formula-One racer Ukyo Katayama.
The Dakar rally starts in Lisbon, Portugal in January next year. The race tests man and machine over 10,000 kilometers (6,200 miles) of rough terrain and parched desert to Dakar, the capital of Senegal, the westernmost country on the African continent.
Onaka said the team will need about 10,000 liters (2,600 gallons) of tempura oil, which will be donated by students, the school cafeteria, as well as neighborhood restaurants. He said it will be reprocessed by biofuel maker Revo International Co. in Kyoto.
Katayama's racing unit, Team UKYO, and Osaka Toyota Corp., a Toyota-affiliated regional car dealer and repair service provider, are also taking part.
Biodiesel fuel is still rare in Japan, though it is used in some buses, garbage trucks and other vehicles in several cities.
"The idea is to drive on biomass fuel, which is easier on the environment, over the dessert that is severely affected by global warming," Katayama wrote recently on his Internet blog. "I want to be the first to complete the Dakar rally on non-fossil fuel."
Although biodiesel fuel generates about 20 percent less power than regular diesel oil, it creates less black smoke and almost no sulfur oxides, a chemical that causes acid rain, Onaka said.
If cost-cutting is achieved through mass-production, tempura oil could be the future fuel for resource-poor Japan, he said. A small drawback, however, is its odor.
"The smell isn't as appetizing as tempura," he said. "After intensive fuel testing in my lab, I had heartburn and didn't even want to look at tempura for a few days."
International ocean freight has it's associated risks and challenges.
Unfortunately, the 'Cougar Ace' car shipper is in peril as we speak, off the Alaskan coastline. With some 4800 new Japanese cars on board and heavy+light fuel, this accident has serious economic and environmental implications.
Yukon's North Canol (Canadian Oil) Road (see map below) was originally started as a war effort to supply oil for U.S./CDN Forces. The project, launched in 1942 was intended to expand the Norman Wells oil fields (NWT), and build a 960km long pipeline to Whitehorse-Yukon through swamps, mountains and over raging rivers.
The hiring office in Edmonton had this job ad posted on June 15, 1942:
THIS IS NO PICNIC Working and living conditions on this job are as difficult as those encountered on any construction job ever done in the United States or foreign territory.
Men hired for this job will be required to work and live under the most extreme conditions imaginable. Temperature will range from 90 degrees above zero to 70 degrees below zero.
Men will have to fight swamps, rivers, ice and cold. Mosquitos, flies and gnats will not only be annoying but will cause bodily harm.
If you are not prepared to work under these and similar conditions
Do Not Apply
On Feb. 16, 1944, despite all environmental challenges, the pipeline finally reached Whitehorse. However, it was a short lived operation, with the Whitehorse oil refinery shutting down on April 1, 1945. Due to the isolation of this road, artifacts and military trucks remain on the side of the road to this day.
The road is now maintained by road maintenance crews for 4x4 traffic to the NWT border at which point the road is washed and and the trek becomes a true expedition! The North Canol Road remains a key access route for outdoor enthusiasts, outfitters and geological exploration co's.

We are now offering select model Toyota LandCruisers for the US market including our extensive OSP service pack! U.S. Federal importation laws requires that our Japanese spec trucks to be 25 YEARS OF AGE OR OLDER for legal entry.

Spring has arrived to the north after one of our mildest winters ever!
We have just completed a thorough road test of our first high roof, Nissan Safari/Patrol arrival. Initial impressions- Very impressive fuel economy, interior volume and overall passenger comfort between the superior seats and coil sprung suspension. Despite being non-turbo, the 4200cc inline 6cylinder TD42 diesel engine has an excellent torque band and is matched to a fantastic 5speed manual transmission with great ratios for highway and mountain driving.
As with many of Nissan’s great diesel engines, the TD42 is designed with functionality and simplicity in mind. Twin oil filters as a factor standard are an example, a very effective cold start system combined with ease of access to the entire engine for servicing.
The solid front axle, suspension and chassis are very solid, and while this truck does not have all the interior luxury features of the LandCruisers wagons, it is very well suited for work/travelling applications and available at considerably lower prices!
This latest Nissan Safari/Patrol will be heading to South America and Africa thereafter.
Whitehorse has many great festivities, this weekend’s highlight, co-sponsored by Outback Imports was the 2006 International Snow Sculpture Challenge. Teams from Alberta, Alaska, British Columbia, Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Quebec, Yukon, Ontario and Japan competed with world class snow sculpting.
Thanks to artists Don Watt, Gisli Balzar and Mike Lane from Team Yukon for organizing this superb event!!! Please check out their website at http://www.snowcarver.ca

RETURN
FROM THE ARCTIC:
Our expedition to the arctic was breath taking! Check out the thumbnails
below. Saddling up our trusty HJ61, we hauled the vintage 21 ft Teslin
freighter canoe 1200 kms up the Dempster Hwy to Inuvik, NWT and then
continued the adventure by boat to Hershel Island on the northwest coast
in the Beaufort Sea. Return route to Inuvik was via the small settlement
of Aklavik in the Mackenzie Delta. Great viewing for Muskox, Belugas,
Griz and of course the Porcupine Caribou Herd. Good stories shared with
local Inuit en route as well… a must see!
